Run at 7,000ft. in beautiful Taos, New Mexico- the "Soul of the Southwest". The Land of Enchantment awaits you with clear blue skies, endless horizons, pure mountain air, low humidity and comfortable summer temperatures of the 7,000ft. mountains of Northern New Mexico.

Begun in 1982 by Jesse Castañeda, the race which began as the "Marathon de Taos" attracts runners from all over the US who seek a quality event with a small race atmosphere. Bruce Gomez, race director has brought national recognition to the event. Last year's event attracted total of 350 runners in all the races combined. (We promise fun, a great time, without the crowds of other marathons!)

Race History

The race was originated by Jesse Castañeda with the help of SunSports, in 1983. The first year's marathon champion was the late Wesley Smith of Gallup, NM with a time of 2hrs.30mn; 2nd place was Steve Worshawer of Albuquerque, NM and 3rd was Bruce Gomez of Taos Pueblo, NM. Participants have included Lionel Ortega, Eloy Sandoval, Gus Cardenas (Los Amigos), who have complete the marathon numerous times in 60+ age category; marathon great Tony Sandoval, mountain aces Senovio Torres and Jerry Martinez and women marathoners Carol Wildman, Janine Aiello and Anissa Dorschner, to name a few. Finishing times have varied from 2:34 to 5:20 for 26.2mi. and 1:10 to 2:30 for the 13.1mi.
Race director, Bruce Gomez, assisted with the event's inception in 1983 and 1984, and has organized and directed the event since 1985. Starting in 2006, the race became the Taos Half Marathon and was used as a training run for marathoners and half marathoners alike. In 2008, the full marathon is back again!

With a 7,000 ft. average elevation, the course features some of northern New Mexico's most beautiful landscape.
